- Wilfred A. Van Handel, age 85, passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Cherry Meadows. Bill was born on May 15, 1925, son of the late Fred and Anna (Schumacher) Van Handel. On September 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lorna J. Kempen at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Wrightstown. Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during WWII. He and Lorna farmed in the area their entire married life. Bill was a member of the Barbershoppers chorus for 27 years. Together, Bill and Lorna enjoyed square dancing, polka music, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. Their last twelve winters were spent in Florida.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorna; 12 children: Mary (Vande Hey) and her husband, Don Clousing, Bob Van Handel, Joan (Jeff) Lamers, Ron (Jackie) Van Handel, Dan (Cathy) Van Handel, Dave Van Handel, Steve (Kris) Van Handel, Larry (Nancy) Van Handel, Julie (Charlie) Gross, Dennis (Tina) Van Handel, Don (Sandi) Van Handel, and Laurie (Terry) Leitzke; 28 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren: Andy (Tiffany) Vande Hey and their children: Quinn and Zane, Mike Van Handel, Nicole (Andrew) Selbo, Katelyn Van Handel, Tiffany, Crystal, Becca and Josh Lamers, Jeremy (Lisa) Van Handel and their children: Jaden and Kaily, Jonathon, Jordan and Ashley Van Handel, Zack, Jacob and Kaylee Van Handel, Tara and Luke Van Handel, Patrick and Megan Van Handel, Caleb and Josh Gross, Ryan and Rachel Van Handel, Erin and Brienne Van Handel, Tyler, Keri and her son, Elijah, and Willie Leitzke; 5 brothers and sisters: Agnes Smudde, Rich (Grace) Van Handel, Ursula (Clarence) Vanden Heuvel, Audrey Van Camp, and Ervin (Ruth) Van Handel. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, in-laws, and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Marvin Vande Hey, a grandson, Jonathon Leitzke, 5 brothers and sisters: Catherine, Marie, Mathias, Irene, and Arthur; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bonnie, Fabian, Marian, Janet, Urban, Jerome, Reuben, George, and Bernice and Marvin, Paul, and Richard Kempen.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2331 E. Lourdes Dr., Appleton, with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Friends will be received on Friday, October 8, 2010, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna, and again directly at church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Bill's name is being established. Burial will take place in Holy Name of Jesus Cemetery in Kimberly.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Norb Schaefer, the staff at Cherry Meadows, Home Instead, Dr. Baum, and the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
