- Elmer Gardner, age 91, of 636 Elizabeth La., died on Friday, August 13, 1993 at the Skaalen Sunset Home in Stoughton after a courageous battle with lung cancer and emphysema. He was born on June 5, 1902 in the Township of Freedom and was the son of the late Edward and Kathryn (Stark) Gardner. As a young man he came to Sun Prairie and worked on farms in the area for several years, then he worked as a bartender in the Old Greenwood Tavern, after that he worked for 15 years at the Wisconsin Porcelain Co. He retired as a painter. He married Catherine Strohmenger on June 6, 1936 and she preceded him in death on September 3, 1975. On November 23, 1979, he married Ann Zimbrick. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed going to Canada for his favorite sport. Survivors include his wife, Ann; a daughter, Marlene Kirk of Mena, AK; two stepdaughters, Judy (Robert) Perkl of DeForest and Jean (Charles) Hall of Clearwater, FL; a special granddaughter, Debra (Roland) Lettman of Janesvllle; another granddaughter, Lisa Bower of Nash, TX; a grandson, Duane (Debbie) Kirk of Plnellas Park, FL; eight great-grandchildren, Michelle, Nicole, Shane and Danielle of Janesville, Kristina and Jake Kirk of Pinellas Park, FL, and Jonathan and Ben Bower of Nash, TX; a sister, Violet Schwamer of Birnamwood; two brothers, Chester and Milan, both of Appleton; two sisters-in-law, Helen Gardner of Wausau and Frances Borchardt of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife; two brothers, Ray and Lee; a sister, Mathilda Gehrlng; and a granddaughter, Stacey Kirk. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 1993 at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St., with Father Felix Oehrleln officiating. Burial will be in Sun Prairie Memory Garden Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15 and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Hospice Care would be appreciated. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Hospice. WSJ 8/14/1993
