- Bernice Mary (Smits) Lutsey, 86, Green Bay, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009. She was born in De Pere, on Aug. 20, 1922, to the late Louis and Elizabeth (Hendricks) Smits. She graduated from East De Pere High School and later moved to Chicago where she met and married her first husband, James Gould, who preceded her in death. Bernice then married Thomas Lutsey Sr,. who also preceded her in death.
She was a saleswoman and owner of The Knothole Bookstore in Green Bay and Fish Creek for 20 years after she raised her six children. She was an avid golfer, bowler, seamstress, and huge sports fan. Bernice was a member of Oneida Golf Club and also Royal Scott Golf Club. She was a longtime member of St. Willebrord Catholic Church.
Survivors include her five children, Jeffrey Gould, Ronald Gould, Mary Diane Gould, Sandra Gould and Debra (James) Schroeder; four grandchildren, Jeremy Schroeder, Janelle (Brett) Moorhouse, John Schroeder, and Thomas Schroeder; and sisters and brothers, Omer L. (Pat) Smits, Delores C. Novachek, Luanne Evelyn (Gene) Vandenberg and Richard R. Smits.
Bernice is preceded in death by her parents; son, Douglas Gould; two sisters, Mildred A. (Arthur) Van Lanen and Betty A. (Jay) Dreis; and brother-in-law, Paul Novachek.
Family and friends may call Saturday, May 9, 2009, at St. Willebrord Catholic Church, 209 S. Adams St., Green Bay, from 8:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Mass of Christian burial will be at the church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Kenneth DeGroot O. Praem officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
