- Boy Killed
Norbert Vandenberg, 17, was instantly killed about 3:30 yesterday afternoon by the discharge of dynamite under a stump on the farm of Arnold Jansen, the boy's uncle, in the towne of Maine. The boy's head was blown off.
Vandenberg, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Vandenberg, route 3, Kaukauna, had been working for his uncle for about two weeks but had started to blast stumps only a day or two ago. The farm, while owned by Mr. Jensen, was rented by Jacob VandenHeuvel.
The boy and Jensen each were working on stumps, three or four rods apart. both set dynamite and fuses and they had arranged to signal each other when the fuse was ignited. There was no signal preceding the blast which killed the youth, leading to the supposition that the dynamite was set off accidentally. Jensen was thrown several feet by the explosion but was not injured.
The body was taken to Kaukauna and the funeral probably will be held from Holy Cross church, Kaukauna, Thursday morning. The boy's survivors are his parents, five sisters, Minnie, Adeline, Viola, Johanna and Frances; four brothers, Edward Herbert, Raymond and Arnold.
