Lawrence Hackel, age 92, died in his sleep during the night of February 25, 2009, as did his beloved wife Margaret (Williams) on December 2, 2002. Survived by eight children: Jean Wulterkens (Paul), Joan Hackel (Peter), Lloyd Hackel (Linda), Rita Hackel Chapin (Samuel), Robert Hackel (Joyce), Richard Hackel (Debbie), Sheri Ellenbecker (Joe) and Joyce Hackel (Robin); fifteen grandchildren: Katie, Laura, Amanda, Mike, Scott, Ben, Melissa, Brian, Jason, Bix, Ginger, Max, Elizabeth, Gabriel and David; four great-grandchildren: Emma, Mitchell, Ava, and Adyson. Also survived by brother Clarence Hackel (Martha) and sister-in-law Rose Hackel.
Lawrence enjoyed a long career in construction, starting as a laborer in 1946, becoming in turn carpenter, foreman and ultimately superintendent for The Oscar J. Boldt Construction Company. He grew up under his mother's Depression era dictum: Make yourself useful! Lawrence was a perfectionist and learned by observing. He enjoyed the respect of co-workers and was a mentor to friends as well as to his grateful children. His legacy includes many fine structures in Appleton and the Fox Valley.
He and his future wife, Margaret, met on May 21, 1939, at the Cinderella Ballroom in Appleton. They were married at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Little Chute on November 30, 1944. Throughout their courtship and married life, they loved to dance. A memorial and interment is planned for the spring.
