    • Brett Michael Rivers, 36, died unexpectedly on Sept. 1, 2009 in Richmond, Va.

      Brett was born on Sept. 23, 1972 in Des Moines, Iowa to Gerald Rivers and Margaret (Recker) Rivers.

      Growing up in New Hostein, Brett attended Holy Rosary Catholic grade school and New Holstein High School. While in high school he was a member of the National Honor Society. He excelled in track and field where he went to the state competition twice. He graduated from high school in 1991. Through his high school years he enjoyed working on cars with his close friends from the New Holstein and Kiel areas.

      After high school he attended St.Norbert College, DePere for a year and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served for five years. With a technical background he had careers in the following companies: Newport News Shipbuilding, Amazon.com, and Microsoft.

      He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Dawn (Hammen); their three children, Abigail, Zachary, and Nicolas; his parents, Margaret (fiancé Tom Thiel) Rivers, Gerald (Sue) Rivers; sister, Jennifer (Joe) Lockwood; two step sisters and one step brother; nephew, Jacob Lockwood and niece, Katherine Lockwood; step nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Madonna Recker; paternal grandparents, Rita Rivers and Dean Rivers; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

      He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Al Recker.

      Funeral services were held at O'Connell Funeral Home in Little Chute, on Sept. 12, 2009.

      Brett will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
