- A FATAL ACCIDENT
MICHAEL DIEDRICH, flagman at the local railroad station was killed Sunday evening when struck by a car driven by Sylvester Freitag of this city, as he was walking on the pavement near the north city limits on highway 57. Mr. Diedrich was struck by the bumper of the car and was hurled against the windshield and right side of the car, the force of the collision throwing him into the ditch a few feet from the pavement. He lived about ten minutes, passing away when Sheriff John B.; Diedrich arrived there to administer aid. He sustained a fractured skull, broken neck and had both legs broken from the force of the collision.
The victim of the tragic accident on Sunday evening is well known in this community and for the past several years has held the position of flagmen at the local railroad crossing. He was 48 years old and unmarried.
Michael Diedrich, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Diedrich, was born in the town of Woodville on Jan. 29th, 1881 on the homestead where Nic Diedrich now resides. For the past three years he has held the position of flagman at the local railroad crossings succeeding the late Gothelf Papke.
He is survived by five brothers, john, George, and Nic of Woodville, Jacob of San Antonio, Texas and Peter, address unknown; two sisters, Mrs. John Lex of Oconto and Mrs. Kathryn Leick of Greenleaf.
Funeral services were held from St. Marys church at Hilbert, Rev. Fr. Geier officiating with interment in St. Marys cemetery.
