Vanden Boogaard, Opal B. Opal B. Vanden Boogaard, Appleton, 88, died Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Franciscan Care Center. She was born in Seymour on Oct. 15, 1918, to the late William and Angie (Johnson) Jensen. Opal graduated from Seymour High School in 1937. She was then employed at the Kimberly Clark Atlas Mill, where she met Elmer J. Vanden Boogaard. On July 16, 1945, Opal traveled to Chicago to marry Elmer at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Their witnesses were the janitor and the rectory cook. Elmer then returned to his war duties in England. Opal gave new meaning to the bumper sticker, "I brake for all rummage sales." One of her favorite pastimes was rummaging at the old Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and Goodwill. Opal square danced with the Romeos and Calicos and enjoyed time spent at the family cottage on Nabor Road on Shawano Lake. She was an excellent wife, mother, homemaker and chef. Opal was an advocate of the Humane Society, as her string of mild to vicious Dachshunds will attest.

Opal is survived by her husband of 61 years, Elmer; children , grandchildren, and great-grandchild, Nancy Randall and son, Christopher Randall, Shreveport, La.; Carol (Ray) Jermstad, Appleton; and daughter, Sara (Tim) Andrew and son, Joseph, Neenah and sons, Nick (Abby Sawyers) Jermstad, Plantsview, Conn.; and Jesse Jermstad, Green Bay; Susan (Dan) Bowman, Appleton; and daughter, Angie Oleszko, University of Minnesota; and sons, Kurt Oleszko (fiance, Keila McCarty), U.S. Navy, Corpus Christi, Texas; and Russell Oleszko, University of Minnesota; William Vanden Boogaard, Tucson, Ariz.; and sons, Adam Vanden Boogaard, U.S. Air Force, Florida; and Matthew Vanden Boogaard, Hastings University of Nebraska, and their mother, Lea; Bruce (Barb Bartel) Vanden Boogaard, Fremont; and Jack (Sandra Thompson) Vanden Boogaard, Appleton, and sons, Alex and Andrew Vanden Boogaard, both of Classical School; sisters and brothers, Kathleen (LaVern) Weishoff, Manitowoc; Wayne (Mary Pat) Jensen, Montello; LaVahn (Nadine) Jensen, Lake Winnebago; Bill Jensen, Shawano; and James (Judy) Jensen, Tacoma, Wash.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine (Otto) Wichmann, Kimberly; Maridel (Ed) Prelwitz, Savannah, Ga.; Paul (Evelyn) Vanden Boogaard, Appleton; and Matt (Marian) Vanden Boogaard, Kimberly; Esther Vanden Boogaard and Dorothy Vanden Boogaard. The Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at St. Joseph Catholic Church (404 W. Lawrence, Appleton). The Rev. Larry Abler O.F.M. Cap. will officiate. A gathering of friends will immediately follow Mass. Committal Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Franciscan Care Center, ACES-Xavier and Fox Valley Lutheran Home.

The Vanden Boogaard Family would like to thank the entire staff at Franciscan Care Center for their special tenderness to Opal.
