    • Aelred A. "Al" Schumacher, age 97, of Stockbridge, bid farewell to his family on Monday, August 17, 2015. He was born November 11, 1917 in Portsmouth, Iowa. He and his family moved to Bonesteel, South Dakota for a short time after Iowa. His family then moved to a farm in Stockbridge when he was 10 years old and had remained ever since.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge and ran the family farm in the Stockbridge Township. In addition to his farm work, Al worked at Arps Corporation and Tecumseh Products in New Holstein for many years.

Al married the love of his life, Madeline Gries, on September 7, 1942 in Sherwood, Wisconsin. They shared their life together for 54 years before her passing in 1996. Al was blessed with 12 children; 6 "wonderful" boys and 6 "beautiful" girls which he lovingly called his two six-packs: Glenn (Sharon) of Appleton, Don (Mariann) of Kaukauna, Lee (Diane) of Appleton, Joe (Sandy) of Hilbert, Dick (Betty) of Stockbridge, John (Karen) of Stockbridge, Carol (Carl) Hermans of Kaukauna, Helen (Robert) Schroeder of Stockbridge, Jane (Sam) Barnett of Howards Grove, Kathy (Rick) Marose of Springstead, Joan (Gary) Nett of Marytown, Mary Jo (Tim) VanderVelden of Kimberly. Al is further survived by his three sisters: Dorothy Kiefer of Kaukauna, Mildred Christie-Miller of Kaukauna, Maxine Kettenhoven of Appleton; and a brother-in-law: Wilfred (Margie) Gries of Manitowoc. His is also survived by 29 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren with 2 others arriving in the coming months, bringing his personal "Family Tree" legacy to a total of 100.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife: Madeline, a daughter Helen and son-in-law: Robert Schroeder, a great granddaughter, two brothers: Lester & Vincent as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Being well known for farming and serving as the neighborhood "fix-it" man, Al was also an avid fisherman both on the water and on the ice. He was well known in the area for his manufacturing of sturgeon spears and was featured on National Geographic TV documentary about sturgeon spearing. He also enjoyed hunting up at the cabin in Tipler with his family. In recent years, he enjoyed watching the many varieties of birds that visited the feeders outside his living room window.

Family was very important to him. He welcomed and enjoyed visits from his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a great story-teller, and everyone loved his stories about family history and his fishing and hunting expeditions.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, August 21, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Michael Betley officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Sherwood. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, August 20, 2015 and on Friday at the church from 9:30 am until 10:30 am. There will be a parish vigil service Thursday evening at the funeral home at the close of the visitation.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Karen and Holly from Calumet County Hospice Care for their kindness and loving care of dad in recent months.
