- Elaine D. (Peters) Sanders, 89, of Sheridan died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing is 5-7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home with Christian Wake Service to follow at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born March 20, 1919, in Rushville, Neb., to Arnold and Philomena (Jahn) Peters, she attended schools through high school. She married Herman L. Sanders on Oct. 15, 1940, in Rushville. They resided in the Hay Springs, Neb., area, where they ranched and raised registered polled Herefords for 12 years. The family moved to Clearmont in 1952, where they ranched until retiring in 1985 to Sheridan. A member of Holy Name Catholic Parish of Sheridan, she active in the Clearmont Women's Club, the Clearmont and Holy Name Altar Society, and Clearmont Farmers Union. She was also an active member of the Sheridan Senior Center as a volunteer and member of the Sheridanaires choral group and the Sheridan chapter of AARP. She was known as a kind and generous person with a strong Christian faith. She was preceded in death by two sons, Henry and Thomas Michael; eight siblings, and two grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; seven children, Nancy Hower, Leland (Bud) Sanders, Doris Wilke, James Sanders, Patricia Sanders, Alan Sanders and Roger Sanders; five foster children including Louie Sickler and Mike and Clifford Haley; a sister, Arlene (Peters) Clarke of Laurel, Mont.; a brother, Arnold Peters of Wimberley, Texas; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
