20-Mile Walk Daily is Part of His Regular Job
      1935

(Editor's Note: This is the twenty-third of a series of articles picturing and describing veteran employes in Appleton industrial and mercantile establishments.)

Though Walter Wildenberg has seen 43 years of service at the Kimberly Clark Paper mill at Kimberly, he feels as fit as the day he turned 40, he claims. He attributes his good health to the some 20 miles he walks each day checking the fire fighting equipment at the Kimberly plant. Mr. Wildenberg is known as the fire chief at the plant and his duty is to see that the pumps, hoses, valves and extinguishers are always ready for use in time of emergency.

He has worked at the plant since 1903. He left the plant to go farming after a big fire at the plant in 1901 when Fire Chief Anderson of Appleton met his death. After a year and a half on the farm he returned to the mill. After working in the paper sorting room and carrying out the duties of mill wright until 1920 he was given the position of fire chief. A crew of more than 30 men has been trained by him to respond instantly to any fire alarm.

The disaster of 1927 was recalled by Mr. Wildenberg who says he narrowly escaped serious injury or death in the cave-in of a portion of the plant. He had been fixing a valve and left the section of the mill a few seconds before the crash to get a wrench.

He resides at Little Chute with his wife. The couple have had 15 children, 10 sons and five daughters. Two of the sons are dead.

Each summer with the help of his sons he keeps a large garden near his home.
