      MRS. WM. BATES, RESIDENT OF CITY SINCE 1869, DIES
      Widow of Civil War Soldier and "Granddaughter of Revolution."

      Mrs. Salome Bates, 85, widow of William Bates, and a pioneer resident of Waterloo, died at midnight Wednesday at her home, 519 Fourth street east, of a complication of diseases incident to advanced age. She had been bedfast for 15 months.

      Mrs. Bates came to Waterloo with her husband in 1869, and Mr. Bates engaged in the produce business. Later he traveled for the grain commission trade.

      Salome Harper was born Dec. 20, 1848, at Hazel Green, Wis., the daughter of Moses Allen and Hester J. Harper. She grew to young womanhood there and on March 4, 1859, was married to William Bates, at Hazel Green.

      Husband on Sherman's March--Mr. Bates had enlisted in the Union forces at the age of 16 and served thruout the Civil War, being with Sherman on his march to the sea.

      The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1919 at Waterloo.

      Mrs. Bates was a member of Christ Episcopal church and of the Ladies' guild and Circle No. 1 of the church; and a member of the Happy Hour club. Mrs. Bates was one of two granddaughters of Revolutionary war soldiers residing in Waterloo, the other being Mrs. C.F. Brown, 420 Commercial street.

      Mrs. Bates' husband preceded her in death, January 31, 1927 at Waterloo.

      Four Children Survive--Surviving are three daugthers, Mrs. H.D. Haffa, 113 Lafayette street; Mrs. T.R. McCoy, 706 Fourth street east; and Mrs. Harland Krueger, Oshkosh, Wis.; one son, Edward Allen Bates, Chicago; two grandchildren, Dorothy Haffa and Henry Haffa, jr.; four great grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Harper, Dr. Neil Harper and J.C. Harper, all of Madison, Wis., and two sisters, Misses Caroline and Mildred Harper, both of Hazel Green, Wis.

      There will be a private service for the family at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the home, 519 Fourth street east, followed by a public service at 2:30 in Christ Episcopal church, Rev. E.H. Mounsey, rector, officiating, assisted by Rev. E.D. Hull. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, beside the grave of her husband.
