    • Frank Zittlow, aged 72 years, died Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock at St. Elizabeth's hospital, Appleton, after submitting to an internal examination on the operating table. His remains were brought to his home on Wednesday night where they were prepared for burial. Mr. Zittlow felt his health failing for the past year and just before Christmas he had paroxysms of terrible pain which gradually became almost unbearable when he sought the best medical aid which proved unavailing.

Frank Zittlow was born in Germany, April 4, 1845, and came to America with his parents in 1856 settling on wild land in the midst of a dense forest of oak and pine just below Wrightstown on the banks of the Fox River. They came to Kaukauna to reside eight years ago. He was married 52 years ago last June4 to Pauline Dobberstein, the widow now surviving.

Surviving also are his seven children, namely; Mrs. George Schmidt of Rockland; Mrs. Rudolph Panzig of Oshkosh; Mrs. William Lostin of Milwaukee; Albert Zittlow of Sniderville, and Fred Zittlow of Kaukauna; also two brothers, Christopher and Gottfried Zittlow of Wrightstown.

For over half a century this early pioneer labored on the same farm where he carved out a home from the great forest which covered the whole country at the time for many miles. What life was like in those times seems difficult of comprehension by the people now living who know nothing of the privations inseperable from the conditions of things then of everyday occurrence. They used at first to follow a trail to Green Bay to go to market and often bore on their backs a grist mill to bring back in the same manner the flour and middlings obtained by grinding the wheat. Roads then were minus and a passing boat on the river was considered a Godsend if on it they could obtain passage by its primitive accommodations. Mr. Zittlow often told of how in the mid-winter he was forced to go to Wrightstown when the whole country was covered with snow four feet deep and to reach the village he walked on the rail fences most of the way and it was weeks before roads were shoveled out so they were passable.

Their hard work in clearing up their farm land was not without reward for all the pine, oak and basswood logs were marketed at the saw mill at Wrightstown. But the labor necessary to cut the logs, haul them to market and do the logging and clearing was herculean and took men of iron constitutions to stand under the tremendous strain. Few are able to fully comprehend all the trials lived through in such a long and arduous life of work.

The pallbearers for Mr. Zittlow will be his children and grandchildren, Albert and Fred Zittlow--his sons and Arthur and Oscar Schmidt-his grandsons.

The funeral will be held at the house and at 11:00 o'clock at Trinity Lutheran church, Rev. William Hinnenthal officiating, with interment in the family lot at the Lutheran cemetery at Wrightstown going thence by interurban line and hearse and hacks at Wrightstown.
