    • Marshfied Time April 28, 1898. After declaration of War against Spain on April 21, 1898, members of Company A, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry were assembled for detachment to South Carolina. Arnold Voelker & Leo Daul were part of this group.

      Wire received 5:48 pm July 29, 1898 from Frank Cady at Charleston that Leo Daul died at 7;30 pm July 28 of typhoid fever. Also it was stated that Arnold Voelker was still seriously ill. Quote from Frank Cady, published Aug. 5, 1898 " Poor Leo! tonight he lies upon a marble slab in Charleston, 1000 miles away from his home, sorrowing relatives and friend. His dreams of home are over and his body will soon return to the dust from which it came."

      The last sad rites to be paid to the one our soldier boys took place at Rosellville on Tuesday, over the body of Leo Daul, a member of Company A, 2nd Infantry, whose death was announced in last weeks Times. The remains, in charge of Frank A. Cady, arrived here Monday morning over the Wisconsin Central and were taken to the undertaking establishment of Geo. W. Upham where they laid in state until the time set for the departure of the funeral, which was held at his old home in Rosellvill on the day mentioned above.
      Leos'death was the result of typhoid fever in the most virulent form. He was sick but a few days and was one of the victims of the forced march ordered by General Ernst.
      The funeral process formed here at 8 a.m and was made up of of ex-members of the militia company, the Marshfied Maennerchori and large number of citizen in carriages. In advance of the funeral several ladies from this city went to Rosellvill and decorated the grave with beautiful flowers and bunting. Arriving there the procession was met by a large concourse of friend and sorrowing relatives who came far and near to pay their last tribute of respect to the dead hero and neighbor. The remains were taken to the Catholic church where Rev. John Eisen of this city, pronounced a fitting eulogy on the life and work of the decease. He ws assisted in the services by Rev. Bauer of Humbird. At the grave the Maennechoir sang tow of the best selctions.
      Leo Daul was born Oct. 18, 1860*in Edison Washington county of this state and came to Rozellville, Marathon county with his parents in the early settlement. He was unmarried and a hardworking man who commanded respect b thos who knew him. To his many sorrowing relatives the Times extends it deepest sympathy in their hour of need.
      August 5, 1898 Card of Thanks for funeral services etc. was signed by Mr. and Mrs. John Brinkman, John & Charles Daul and Martha Schuh.
