- Mary Malchow, 78, a wonderful, wife, mother, sister,grandmother and great-grandmother, was called home by our Heavenly Father due to cancer.
Mary was born Oct. 9, 1935, to the late Matt and Stella (Fischer) Verfurth. She graduated from Kaukauna High School Class of 1953 and worked in the office of Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co., until her marriage to Wayne Malchow in June of 1958. They moved to Milwaukee, where she was employed as a teacher's aide for the Milwaukee Public School system for 13 years and as a secretary for the city another 5 years. They also lived in Menomonee Falls for 7 years before moving to Neenah.
Mary loved shopping, going out to lunch with her daughter, sister and friends, spent time cooking, baking, working on crossword puzzles and shared her husband's hobby of the Packers and travel. One thing she was proud of was winning 2 national cooking contests. They traveled to every one of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. Also traveled in parts of England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. The highlight of the trip was a visit to the town of Malchow, which had been behind the Iron Curtain, where they had coffee with the mayor and the press.
She is survived by her husband and best friend, Wayne; her daughter, Gail and son-in-law, Jeff Hilbert, Hubertus, Wis.; her grandson, Gregory Starke and his wife,, Claire; great-grandchildren, Kali, Natalie, Andrew and Logan Starke. She is also survived by a sister, Betty Niesen, Kaukauna; another sister, Jane Voet, Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Richard Verfurth, Kaukauna; 2 brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Glen (Barbara) Malchow, Prescott, AZ.; and Jim (Karen) Miller, Appleton; many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A private memorial service was held at 2 in the afternoon at home, Saturday, May 24, 2014. Mary was cremated.
