- Mr. Joseph L. Kersten, 66, of 6423 S. Union Road, Manitowoc, died Saturday morning, October 31, 1987, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and 10 a.m. at St. Casimer Catholic Church, Northeim. THe Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Charles Mocco and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Graveside military rites will be accord by V.F.W. Post 659.
Mr. Kersten was born July 12, 1921, at Brillion, Wisconsin, son of the late Henry and Margaret Roedig Kersten. He married Gladys V. Stanzel on September 28, 1946, at Holy Innocents Catholic CHurch, Manitowoc. After marriage the couple settled in the city of Manitowoc until 6 years ago when they moved to their present address. Mr. Kersten was owner and operator of Kersten Paint Store from 1949 until retiring in 1981. He was a member of Newton Lions, VCT and TPA; member and past commander of V.F.W. Post 659 and also served on the State V.F.W. Competition Committee. Mr. Kersten served with the 28th Photo Reconnoissance [sic] Squadron of the United States Air Corp during World War II. He served 26 months in the Pacific Theatre.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard and Peggy Kersten of Manitowoc and James and Joan Kersten of Manitowoc and Robert Kersten at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Tom Vnuk of Manitowoc and Kathy and Larry Kaminski of Worthington, Ohio; two brothers, Ray Kersten of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and Larry Kersten of Dubuque, Iowa; three grandsons, Ross, Ryan and Jason Kersten; two granddaughters, Sara and Heid Vnuk; and two step granddaughters, Kerry and Kim Kaminski. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie, Veronica and Marie.
There will be no Monday evening visitation. Pfeffer Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. The family would appreciate memorials to the American Cancer Society and Wisconsin Kidney Foundation.
