Alvin L. Verkuilen Winneconne
Age 84, died peacefully Saturday evening, October 25, 1997 at Mercy Medical Center, Oskosh, Wisconsin. He was born August 1, 1913 in Little Chute, Wisconsin, the son of the late Matthew and Kate (Vosters) Verkuilen. He married Gertrude Stark, in 1937 and they made their home in Appleton, where Al enjoyed a successful career in construction. Following his retirement in 1959 they moved to Winneconne, where they founded Lakeside Marena. He laterdeveloped The Landings, an elite waterfront community in Winneconne. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Winneconne, where he was a member of the building committee for the existing church. As much as he loved Winneconne, he always looked forward to spending the winter months at his oceanside condominium in Hillsboro Beach, Florida.
Al is survived by his beloved wife, Carlene Verkuilen, whom he married October 17, 1992; twi sibs, Butch (Charlotte) Verkuilen and Tom Verkuilen, all of Winneconne; four grandchildren, Mike (Pam) Verkuilen, Winneconne; Tim Verkuilen, Oshkosh, and Amy Verkuilen, Winneconne, and her fiance Ray Kampo, and two great granddaughters, MacKenzie and Morgan. Al is further survived by his wife Carlene;s sons, Keith (Doreen) Johnson and their three son, of Winneconne, and Richard Johnson, of Venice, Virginia. He will be deeply missed by his family and close friends, Russ Young and Barb Winnekens as well as many others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings; his first wife, Gertrude Verkuilen; a daughter in-law, Jeane (Carpenter) Verkuilen, and a granddaughter Jami Verkuilen.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday October 29, 1997, at 11 a.m. st St. Mary Catholic Church, Winneconne, with the Rev. LeRoy Smet officiating. Burial will be in the Wenneconne Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mueller Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 28, 1997, from 4 to 8 p.m. A prayer service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. at the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of services. A memorial has been established to benefit the community.
