    • BODDE FARMS
      George F. Bodde
Theodore Bodde the original owner of the farm
property came directly from Alsace- Lorraine, a
small country that existed in disputed ownership
between Germany and France during the 1800's. In
approximately 1860, at the age of 16 he settled in
the town of Woodville Calumet County. He met
and married Catherine Digman. Theodore and
Catherine had four children before purchasing the
property now known as Bodde Farms. The original
farm consisted of 120 acres, including farm buildings.
It was purchased on February 20, 1880 for $2,
      400. In March of 1914 an additional 65 acres was
added. After the farm purchase, Theodore and
Catherine added eight more children to their family.
It's interesting to note that many of their children
never married and those that did had very
few children, or none of their own.
Theodore added 40 acres of land to the farm before
his death on June 2, 1923. The farm then went
to his wife from June 2, 1923 to March 29, 1934.
After Catherine's death the farm was purchased by
their tenth child, William, from Catherine's estate.
William and his wife Rosalie owned the property
      from July 23, 1937 to June 6, 1967. In 1938 the
original Ll.S. Hwy. 41 was built and this split the
Bodde property. Approximately 1939, William sold
40 acres of Bodde property to the neighboring
farmer. Also in that year an addition on the original
barn was built, along with a new storage shed.
With these changes, also brought the decision to
join the Consolidated Badger Co-op. William was
one of the original members of the Co-op in the
Appleton area. In 1941 the original Bodde farm
house was torn down and a new farm home was
built. This home is the farm house yet today. In
the late 50's, Ll.S, Hwy. 41 was upgraded and two
additional traffic lanes were added. This split the
Bodde property for the second time. In 1956 William
and Rosalie built their retirement home making
it the second house on the farm.
William died in 1967 and the farm then went to
his wife Rosalie. Rosalie owned the farm until June
30, 1969 when their only child George bought the
farm. George is still the owner today.
George married Florence Steffens in 1948. Since
their acquisition of the farm they added another
addition to the barn, a machine shed, a large garage,
a machinery repair shop, and three silos.
They had five children; Wayne, Joan, Laura, Rosalie,
and William. William died nine months after
his birth, the other children are still living today,
each has married with families of their own. Each
has their own special interest in the family farm.
Fortunately, George and Florence continue to
work with their oldest child, Wayne, as he hopes
to continue in the Bodde tradition and be the next
owner of the Bodde Estate. Wayne married Judy
Verhoven in 1973. In 1975 Wayne and his wife
Judy built a new home for his family on the Bodde
property, making it the third house on the farm.
They now have four children: William, Elizabeth,
Abigail and Martha. He and his family continue to
work daily for the farm. Wayne and his oldest
child, William, hope to continue in the Bodde tradition
for many, many years to come.
