      Peter Lappen, a pioneer settler in Kaukauna sixty years ago, died at his home at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Diedrich street Thursday, November 21, from chronic ailments after an illness of four months, aged 78 years, 9 months and 6 days.

      Mr. Lappen was born at Ervel, Holland, and came to Kaukauna sixty years ago last spring and has resided in this vicinity ever since. He lived in the village of Kokalo a short time and then removed to Little Chute where 51 years ago he was married to Miss Gertrude Tielimans at St. John's church, which sanctuary he helped to build. Previous to this he helped build the locks at Combined Locks. Soon after he purchased a farm in the town of Woodville which is now owned by his son John Lappen. Twenty years ago he came to Kaukauna and built the home at which he died. His first wife departed this life two years ago and was buried at Holy Cross cemetery. Mr. Lappen was married again a year ago to Mrs. Mary Van Opstul, who survives.

      His children surviving are John of Woodville, Peter, Jr. and Frank of Green Bay, Mrs. John Arnoldson of Freedom, Martin of Minneapolis, Minn. and Anton of Crane, Wis., who were all present at the last sad rites.

      The funeral was held Saturday morning at ten o'clock from Holy Cross church. Monsignoir P. J. Lochman, vicar general of the Green Bay diocese officiating. Interment was in the family lot.

      Those attending the obsequies from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. John Lappen of Woodville, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lappen, Frank Lappen of Green Bay, Mr. and Mrs. John Arnoldson, Freedom, Martin Lappen of Minneapolis, Minn., Anton Lappen of Crane, Mr. and Mrs. C. Coates, Mr. an Mrs. John Lyendecker, Miss Anna Hooyen of Kimberly, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hermson and Mr. And Mrs. Henry Foster of Little Chute.
