    • Sylvester M. Merline, 86, of Camp Douglas, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at the VA Hospital in Tomah, after a severe stroke several weeks earlier. He was born on June 13, 1921, in Oconto, WI, to Howard and Jane (Des Jarlais) Merline. He married Rosemary Angeline McCarthy on May 6, 1939, in Escanaba, MI.

      He was preceded in death by his wife in 1986, and three siblings, Howard Merline Jr., Florence Merline, and Melba Lince.

      He is survived by his six sons, Merlin (Camp Douglas), Robert (and wife Linda, Fish Creek, WI), Richard (and wife Barbara, Three Rivers, CA), William (Golden, CO), Mark (and wife Kathy, Madison, WI), and Christopher (Camp Douglas); his loyal friends Kia Lo Vang and family (Camp Douglas), as well as five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

      He served in the U.S. Army as a linesman in Alaska during World War II. His career was as an auditor for the US Property and Fiscal Office at Camp Williams, WI, with concurrent lifetime military service in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, retiring at the rank of Sergeant Major. He initiated a Cub Scouting program for Camp Douglas in the mid-1960s. He was Cubmaster for many years and served several stints as Boy Scout Scoutmaster. He was elected Assessor for the Village of Camp Douglas and served many years in that position. He was a member of the Board of St. James Catholic Church in Camp Douglas, and a member of the Camp Douglas Lions Club. Like his father and grandfather, he was a church usher for numerous years. His passions included fishing, hunting, gardening and woodworking. He had a particular interest in antiques and collectables and was an avid collector over several decades.

      A funeral Mass was held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Camp Douglas with Fr. John Ofori-Domah presiding.Burial followed at St. James Catholic Cemetery, Camp Douglas, with military honors. Relatives and friends called on Wednesday, June 20, at the Hare Funeral Home in New Lisbon from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (with a rosary at 7 p.m.) and also at the church today from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
