- Mr. Howard A. "Bud" Merline 79, 2006 Park Avenue,died Friday
afternoon,July 14,1995 at Riverside Nursing Center,Oconto,,following a courageous battle with cancer.
Howard was born June 3,1916,at Oconto,to the late Howard S.
and Jane [Desjarlais]Merline.He graduated from Oconto High
School and attended college at Ripon,WI and San Mateo,California.Howard joined the US Army Co.C 127 Division
in October, 1940. He was awarded the Purple Heart,after being wounded in December 1944.He continued to serve his country until his discharge in September,1945.Howard married the former Joan Vandenack on June 15,1946. He owned and operated
the Circle Truck Stop for 22 years,and Oconto Self Service
for another 22 years,until his retirement in 1992.Howard greatly enjoyed reading, and loved comedies and war movies.
Mr. Merline was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church,Oconto.He was also a life member of the Amvets,DAV,VFW,and Co. C National Division.He was also a member of the American Legion and Red Arrow Club of Detroit,MI.Howard was in charge of the Co.C 127 Infantry Red Arrow Division Reunions after Co.C left Oconto in 1940.
In addition,He was actively involved in the Oconto County Handicapped Citizens Association.
Howard is survived by his wife,Joan;six sons,Lynn[Barb],Dean,Jay[Sharie]and Terry,all of Oconto;Robin[Ginger]Menasha;Scott[Ann],Green Bay;two daughters,Rhea[Richard]Marien,Antigo and Lori [Jeff]Furrer,River Falls;two sisters,Florence Merline and Melba Lince,both of Oconto;one brother,Sylvester of Camp Douglas;twenty three grandchildren,Sherry[John]Osmon;Stacey Jensen;Monty Jensen;Stephanie[Todd]Reed;Karen Sieglaff;Angelyn Baade;Jayme & Kori Merline;Loris,Alric,Maia,and Elliot Marien;Monica,Andrea,Tammy,David D.,Sara,Michael,David,Jesse,Genesis,Tracey and Jane Merline;
thirteen great-grandchildren;and six nephews.
The family received relatives and friends at the Rhodes-Charapata Funeral Home,121 Congress Street,Oconto,on Monday.
Mass of Resurrection,was Tuesday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church,Oconto. The Rev. Terry LaCombe officiating.Interment
was at Oconto Catholic Cemetery. Military Rites were conducted at the church following the mass.Howard's sons served as palbearers.
