- WASHINGTON - Shirley Kesler DeGroot, 88, of Washington, Ill., died at 9:47 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Eureka, Ill.
She was born on Oct. 17, 1923, in Eureka, Ill., to Loren P. and Ermine Felter Kesler. A 1941 Eureka High School graduate, Shirley studied journalism and was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority at the University of Illinois. Shirley married Joseph L. DeGroot of Little Chute, Wis., on Feb. 23, 1946, in Chicago, Ill.
She is survived by her husband, Joe of Washington; two children, Becky (Mike) Irons of Indianapolis, Ind., and Jeff (Rebecca) DeGroot of Germantown Hills, Ill.; two grandchildren, Kate DeGroot and Sonnie Irons; and two great-grandchildren, Lanie and Camilla.
Her parents preceded her in death.
In addition to her many activities, Shirley served on the Eureka Community Unit 140 School Board from 1975 to 1981.
Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington is assisting the family with arrangements. There will be no services. Cremation will be accorded.
