Vandenberg, Eleanor "Ellie" (De Goey)
Eleanor "Ellie" (De Goey) Vandenberg, 75, formerly of Freedom, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna, with her family by her side. She was born on Oct. 19, 1934, in Combined Locks, daughter of the late John P. and Amelia (Peters) De Goey. On June 23, 1953, she was united in marriage to Donald "Zeke" Vandenberg who preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 2002.
Her greatest joy was being with her grandchildren and keeping their candy dish full. She was one of the first to help get the Girl Scouts started in Freedom, and was a leader for three years. Ellie was a waitress at Colonial Lanes and also worked at Parkside Care Center for 17 years until her retirement. Her hobbies were cross-stitching, knitting dish cloths, and her favorite was reading.
She is survived by her daughters, Laurie (Steve) Presteen and Linda (Gerald "Scooby") Schumacher; four sons, Dan "Butch" (Sue), David "Cricket" (Joan), Bruce "Clem" (Stacy) and Bryan "Cheesy" (Kristy) Vandenberg; 14 grandchildren, Sara and Andy Presteen, Connie (Bill) Erickson and Jamie (Ron) Lundrigan, III, Dana Vandenberg (fiance, Clint Dederich), Amanda Vandenberg, Nick, Jake and Matt Vandenberg, Kelly and Katie Schumacher, Monica, Deion and Riley Vandenberg; four great-grandchildren, Kallysta, Kadynce, Khylan and Kashtyn Erickson. Ellie is further survived by her sisters, Sylvia Bird and Angie Vander Steen; a stepsister, Joann Jansen; a stepbrother, John Wirth; and a brother-in-law, Leo Vandenberg; a sister-in-law, Ann Uehlein; her husband's family, Gene and Lou Ann Vandenberg, Pat and John Bougie, Diane and Don Krueger, Sue Pahl, Betty and Carl Evers; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Don; her stepmother, Ann De Goey; her only brother, Bill (Lea Ann) De Goey; sisters, Betty Keller and Marion Vandenberg; a stepsister, Betty (Alvin) Pennings; a stepbrother, Orville (Mary) Schommer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carol (Bob) Bumester, Bob Bird, Bill Jansen, Eugene (Stoney) Vander Steen; nieces, Sandy Bloom and Mary Brandle; nephews, Dan and Tom Vander Steen and Vernon Vandenberg, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lawrence and Ann Vandenberg; and a brother-in-law, Bernie Schuh.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, W2037 County Road S in Freedom. Fr. Bob Vandenberg and Deacon Don Newhouse will concelebrate the Mass. Interment will be in the St. Nicholas parish cemetery. Friends may call DIRECTLY at the church on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until the time of the mass.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Eleanor's name is being established.
