Freedom
Age 70, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at his home with his family by his side. The son of the late Lawrence and Anna (Geurden) Vandenberg, Donald was born Nov. 10, 1931, in the town of Lawrence. Don graduated from Freedom High School in 1950. In 1955, he married the former Eleanor DeGoey in Combined Locks. He was employed by Miller Electric for 42 years, retiring in 1994. Don was an avid sportsman and loved the Packers. He helped organize and coached the Freedom Little League. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8061, was a charter member of the Freedom Volunteer Fire Dept and was on the board of directors for the Kaukauna Bowling Association for 20 years. Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years: Eleanor (De Goey); two daughters and sons-in-law: Laurie (Steve) Presteen and Linda (Jerry "Scooby") Schumacher; four sons and daughters-in-law: Daniel "Butch" (Sue) Vandenberg, David "Cricket" (Joan) Vandenberg, Bruce (Stacy) Vandenberg and Bryan "Cheesy" (Kristy) Vandenberg; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother and sisters: Eugene (LuAnne) Vandenberg; Pat (John) Bougie, Diane (Don) Krueger, Suzanne Pahl and Betty (Carl) Evens; his wife's family: Bill (LeAnne) DeGoey, Sylvia Bird, Angie (Stony) VanDerSteen, Carol Burmester, JoAnne Jansen and John Wirth Jr. Don was preceded in death by his wife's parents: John and Amelia DeGoey; her stepmother: Anne; and a brother-in-law: Bernie Schuh. Funeral services were held 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, with the Rev. Dennis Ryan officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
