    • Lavira "Vi" Ethel Allen DuBois; beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother peacefully went to be with the Lord on Wednesday May 11, 2011, at the age of 88.

Vi was born on September 11, 1922 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where she met and married her dashing high school sweetheart Keith. She shared 68 beautiful years with her husband and best friend Col. (Ret.) Keith F. DuBois, and together they embraced the challenges and blessings of a military life, travels, and three wars. When asked how she kept the romance alive for so many years, she was quoted as saying, "Love, Love, Love, being happy, smiles, laughter, looking your best at all times, and smelling good. Tell them deeply and often that you love them and appreciate what they do."

Vi was blessed with a large family, and leaves behind a wonderful legacy. She believed family came first, and had an amazing way of nurturing a special and unique relationship with each and every family member.

Vi loyally served God daily through her actions and service to others. She positively touched everyone who was honored to know her, with her compassion and sense of equality. Vi taught her children and grandchildren that every cloud has a silver lining, to look for the good in other people, and to always put yourself in another's shoes. In all things she lived by example, and believed that God's plan for our own lives is not always evident, and everything happens for a reason. Everyone who entered her home was welcomed as family, and felt her presence in their lives.

She was known as "Mom and Grandma" to all. Vi celebrated every birthday, anniversary, and holiday to its fullest. Her joys were music, dancing, gardening, exercising, the warm sun, sewing, baking, gift giving, and writing letters to family and friends. She created handmade personal stationary and cards for every occasion, and touched the lives of everyone who received them. She had a beautiful sense of humor, and believed that the priceless gift of a smile can change a life forever. She was a gifted writer and poet, and leaves her family with decades of cherished memories honoring her spirit and creativity.

Vi's yard was her personal sanctuary, and she taught her children many lessons by connecting with God and nature. Lilies, purple irises, and mountain laurels will forever bring warmth to our hearts. We will miss her gentle hands placed on our cheeks as she lovingly stood close, whispered words of wisdom, and made each of us feel like the apple of her eye.

Vi was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Catherine Verheyden Allen, four brothers Robert, Arthur, Bill, and Tom, and two sisters Lillian and Esther. She is survived by her loving older sister Gladys Gantz from Green Bay, her devoted husband Keith, her nine children Allan DuBois, Kathryn (Kathy) Boenisch, Mary McKay, Barbara (Barb) Riovo, Dianne (Dee) Carol, Joan Vorauer, Christine (Tina) McComas, Paul DuBois and Patricia (Trish) DuBois and spouses Pam DuBois, Ken Boenisch, Jim Riovo, Dale Carol, Herbert Vorauer, Lisa DuBois, Scott Emerson; 25 grandchildren and 16 spouses, and 37 great-grandchildren.

Vi's loving spirit will be celebrated with a Visitation and Rosary on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 7:00 PM at The Angelus Funeral Home, 1119 North St. Mary's Street, San Antonio, Texas 78215. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church, 111 Barilla Place, San Antonio, Texas 78209. Private burial to follow church service. In lieu of flowers, Vi and the DuBois family would be most honored by a donation in her name to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation: or 1-800-377-3978. Condolences may be sent to the DuBois family at
