- Evelyn Mary LaBella, 94, a resident of Lake Oswego passed away on Saturday December 23, 2018 at her home.
Evelyn was born on August 14, 1924 in Roy, OR. She was one of seven children born to George and Mary (Vanderzanden) Spiering. She was raised on the family farm in Roy, attended St Francis of Assisi Grade School and Banks High School graduating with the Class of 1942.
Following High school Evelyn moved to Portland and began working in the shipyards during WWII as a welder. Following the War she was employed as a seamstress for Pendleton Factories in Portland, and a meat wrapper for Thriftway.
She met her future husband, Joseph "Joe" LaBella through mutual friends. They courted for three years and married on September 4, 1950 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy, OR. Following their marriage they made their home in East Portland. Joe passed away on March 19, 1973 and Evelyn continued to live in her home until February 2017.
In 2017 she was hit by a car while crossing Burnside near her home, Evelyn sustained a long rehabilitation from her injuries and was later moved to her current foster care home in Lake Oswego.
Having no children of their own Evelyn and Joe became a loving and cherished aunt and uncle to their many nieces and nephews. Evelyn being the aunt that lived in the city, would often have them stay overnight with her. The family has many stories of shopping and ice skating. Evelyn was a great cook, liked to read and garden. She also canned most of her produce from her gardens. Joe and Evelyn traveled some to visit his family in Wisconsin and to Hawaii. Following Joe's passing Evelyn made a trip to Italy with his family. She was the family historian, liked her dogs and cats and was always willing to discuss social events. Evelyn was a devoted Catholic and most of her life revolved around her church at Holy Rosary Church, where she sang in the choir for many years.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband; Joe, her parents and siblings, Donald, David, Norman, Dick, Herb and Jimmy.
She is survived by her nieces; Kathleen Poor, Fauna Vanblarcom, Leah McDonald, Jill Krueger, Judy Brumfield, Angela C LaBella, Antoinette LaBella Rose, Angela LaBella Romig, Frances Fiore Ervin. Her nephews; James Hodge, Dan Spiering, Mark Coronna, David Coronna, John Cuccia, Joe Cuccia, Joseph C. LaBella, John LaBella, Joseph M. LaBella, Anthony Fiore.
