    • Pat Eberly of Veneta, died March 24 of congestive heart failure. He was 73.

      Pat was born May 7, 1930, in Banks to Albian and Peggy Skelton Eberly. He married Martha "Marty" Jansen in Verboort on Feb. 5, 1952.

      He grew up in Banks and settled in Veneta 47 years ago.

      He served in the National Guard. He was employed as a logger with International Paper for 40 years and retired in 1992.

      He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed gardening and following his granddaughters' sports activities.

      He was an active volunteer and played Santa Claus for the Eugene Parks and Recreation Department for seven years. He also served as a classroom assistant at Veneta Elementary School five days a week for the past nine years. He received an Oregon Volunteer Ambassador Award from the Oregon Volunteer Network and Governor's Commission on Senior Services in 2001 and an Everyday Hero Award from the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Kiwanis International in 2002. He also received a Falcon Spirit Award for his support of the girls' athletics program at Elmira High School.

      Survivors include his wife; a son, David; a daughter, Diane Sconce of Veneta; a brother, Ronnie of Pasadena; nine grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.
