- Emmett Joseph Bernards passed away from age-related causes. He was 85. Born to Joseph and Emma (Achen) Bernards, he grew up on the family farm in North Plains with his sister, Betty Evers, who died last year. Prior to retirement in the mid-70s, Emmett was the studio engineer for KGW. While his career began in radio's golden age of "live" big band remotes, he kept up-to-date, and was instrumental in the 1968 launch of KGW sister-station KINK. Emmett was of a special breed: a practical engineer who, in the words of KGW announcer Craig Walker, "kept stations on the air despite old equipment, limited budgets, and on-air people like me who had no idea why or how any of it worked!" His ethos epitomized efficiency. Emmett spent days in attic and crawl spaces, thermometer in hand, pursuing any wisp of wasted heat. His extensive breadth of knowledge-from health to global warming-stimulated thought over many a Ringside steak dinner. Stock market research and investing were lifelong hobbies and savvy strategies earned him the admiration and envy of financial professionals. Emmett is survived by his longtime companion, Lois South; her son, Glenn and his family; and friend, Jacquie Will. Those who loved him-some for a half-century-cherish his independent spirit, keen intellect, and the wise counsel he gave of so freely
