  • Notes
    • While August Schubring was drilling a well on the farm of Gottlieb Steinelle, in the town of Brillion, he struck a vein of natural gas at a depth of ninety-eight feet which threw the drill 150 feet in the air with such force that it crashed through the roof of a barn in its descent. The earth trembles for 500 feet around the well. The roaring can be heard for a quarter of a mile away and the eruption resembles steam.
Centralia Enterprise and Tribune, September 8, 1894.

Ill with pleurisy for about two weeks at his home at the Albert Schubring farm, Aug. Schubring, 86, died of ensuing complications last Sunday morning.

He was one of a few survivors of the once numerous German immigrants occupying this locality, his birth having occurred in the province of Pomerania, Germany, on June 8, 1860, about a year before his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schubring, came to America. The family settled first near Genessee Depot, Waukesha county, Wisconsin, moving in August 1866 to a location now part of the Keller lands about a mile and a half north of forest Junction.

After his marriage to Miss Bertha Moede of Reedsville on June 15, 1883, Mr. Schubring engaged in arming for approximately 30 years on the place a mile south of Forest Junction. On retiring to the village when the farm was taken over by his son, Albert, he worked for several years in the Arndt blacksmith shop. While on the farm he was a member of the Brillion town board of supervisors, served on the building committee when the present Evangelical church in Forest Junction was erected in 1895,a dn was treasurer of the Forest Junction circuit of Evangelical churches for many years. His wife died in June 1923.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Aug. Knoespel and Mrs. Edward Franzske, Forest Junction and Mrs. Lester Franzske, town of Holland, and Mrs. Amelia Luckow and Mrs. Aradlia Luckow, both of Plymouth; two sons, William of Plymouth and Albert of Forest Junction; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Loefer and Mrs. John Loefer of Forest Junction; 19 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
The Rev. G. L. Bursack condudted the funeral services Wednesday at the Luecker funeral home at Brillion and at the Evangelical church at Forest Junction, followed by burial in the church cemetery.
