- Mildred A. Bergstrom, age 101, of Ewing, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016, at St. Josephs Nursing Home in Norfolk, Nebraska. She was born on July 19, 1915 in Ewing, the daughter of John and Caroline (Vandenberg) Sanders.
Mildred had two years of normal training in high school and attended one semester at Wayne State College. She taught school for three years at Keeler, one year at Deloit, and a year and half at Emporia, all in the Ewing area. Mildred managed her brother's store, Curly's Market, during World War II.
On May 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to Lester "Jap" Bergstrom at St Peter's Catholic Church in Ewing. Jap died at the end of 1961, the same year their youngest child Kevin was born, leaving Mildred to raise their seven children alone.
She was a member of St Peter's Church in Ewing where she taught CCD and was involved in Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a Girl Scout and Brownie leader, and a town librarian from 1978 until 1992.
Mildred made bread, cinnamon rolls and quilts for her family. The quilts were very much appreciated not only for their warmth but for the love that was put into them.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; two sons, Kevin and Francis; daughter, Rita Jean; brothers, Art and Aelred "Curly" Sanders; sisters, Ethel Trumble, Laura Stanage, and Bernice Harlan; and two grandchildren.
She is survived by: son, Denis (Jody) Bergstrom; daughters, Carolyn (Jake) Schindler, Mary Jareske, Ann Shelden, and Brenda (Paul) Greenlee; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Bergstrom; 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and three step-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Ewing, Nebraska. Interment in St. Peters Catholic Cemetery in Ewing.
