- As a youth, Vincent John VanGompel was an aspiring, talented musician who played the clarinet, saxaphone, and violin and performed with a band before he was married. Unable to complete his education due to the financial responsibility of supporting his mother, he worked at the Little Chute Mill from an early age. Many times he was without work when the river was frozen, forcing the mill to shut down.
After his marriage to Johanna and the birth of five children, being unable to support his family on his wages, itbacame necessary for Johanna to seek alternate employment for Vincent. She approached Mr. Sensenbrenner of the Kimberly Clark Corporation and obtained a position for Vincent as a painter so that his income would be steady and sufficient to meet his families needs. Vincent held numerous positions, as a roust about, as a millwright and in the boiler room, with the firm until his retirement. He and Johanna resided in Kimberly for many years and then moved to the lower cliffs in Menasha.
