- Weber, Charles M 2000 Appleton Post Crescent dated July ? Charles M. Weber 2600 Heritage Woods Drive Appleton Age 85, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Peabody Manor, Appleton. Charlie was born on May 14, 1915, in Kaukauna to the late Mathias and Anna (Romenesko) Weber. He married Dorothy Hoffman on May 31, 1941, in Mackville; she survives. Charlie graduated from Holy Cross Grade School in Kaukauna and the high school department of St. Francis Seminary in St. Francis, Wisconsin. During the 1930s he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in northern Wisconsin, a program which employed young men in the forests, and sent part of their pay to their parents. Charlie was working at the foundry in Kaukauna when he enlisted in the U.S. Army; he spent three years with the U.S. Army Ground Forces 18th Chemical Maintenance Company in WWII in Europe. He was entitled to the ETO Service Medal with battle stars for Northern France and Rhineland, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Service Unit Citation, Victory Medal and three overseas service bars. Charlie was a member of the Catholic Knights, Catholic Order of the Foresters, lifetime member of Veterans Of Foreign Wars, and held a Gold Card (50+ years) in the national Plumbers Union. He worked as a plumber for various firms in the Fox River Valley, with the last 8 working years as a Plumbing Inspector. In addition to working at the trade, he also taught apprentice plumbers through Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton. He held a Masters License and a Designers License, and did some free-lance plumbing designing after retirement. While his children were growing up, he did religious instruction at St. Margaret Mary, Neenah. Charlie was also an adult member of the Girl Scouts, installing and maintaining plumbing at Chalk Hills Camp near Wausaukee. He completed part of his training toward becoming a Deacon of the Catholic Church. Charlie assisted his parishes with pastoral duties, such as visiting the sick and distributing Holy Communion at Mass and to home bound parishioners. After his retirement, he lived at Cecil, Wisconsin, for 8 years, where he was active at St. Martin Church and did political activities with the Wisconsin Coalition for the Aging. Charlie worked with a creative writing group, publishing a number of stories and he self-published his war memoirs titled, "Spam Again." He also had a few supporting roles in plays at the Mielke Theater in Shawano. Survivors include his wife of 59 years; his daughters, Rita T. (Michael) Shores, Green Bay; Nancy W. (Robert) Margraf, Green Bay; and Barbara J. Weber, West Milwaukee; his sons, Phillip M. (Patricia) Weber, Sherwood; and Carl J. (Barbara A.) Weber, Green Bay; his grandchildren, Sarah (Todd) Minten, Mathias Weber (fiancee Jennifer West); Joel Weber, Julie Weber, Jennifer (Scott) Vandeleest, Rebecca Margraf; and his two great-grandchildren, Skye Anna Vandeleest and Joseph Minten; and his sister, Verona Van Schijndel, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, Appleton. Charlie is further survived by his brothers-in-law and his sisters-in-law, Mildred Weber and Florence Weber, both of Kaukauna; Urban (Dorothy) Hoffman, Town of Menasha; Rita B. Hoffman, Appleton; Kenneth (Rita) Hoffman, Appleton, and Elmer (Florence) Hoffman, Kimberly. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Nicholas, Louis, Edward, Michael and Herbert Weber; and his sisters, Mary Ann Specht, Katherine West and Theresa Kons. The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 2000, at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 West Lawrence Street, Appleton, with Fr. John Holly officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends may call directly at the church on Monday from 3 p.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Charles' name.
