DEATH OF A CENTENARIAN. Mr. PETER PENDLETON, father of William and
Silas Pendleton, of this city, and Louis Pendleton, of New Langlade county,
died at his home in the town of Neenah, Winnebago county, on Thursday of
last week at the ripe old age of 100 years. His funeral occurred on Sunday, and
was attended by his two sons in this city, with their families. We take the
following regarding the death of Mr. Pendleton from the Neenah Daily Times of
Tuesday. Peter Pendleton, whose death and burial in the town of Neenah has
already been noticed in the Times, was really 100 years of age. A Times man
yesterday interviewed his son, William Pendleton, of Shawano, who was here
to attend the funeral. He said that his father arrived at Green Bay from
Brothertown, N.Y., in the year 1828, and as he frequently stated he was 40
years of age when he arrived at Green Bay, his age at the time of his death
was 100 years, a ripe old age indeed. At the funeral on Sunday there were 10
of his 12 living children present, 5 of his 17 children being dead. He came to
Neenah when only a wilderness existed here. In 1842 he became a "squatter"
on the farm where he died. Geo. H. Mansur also arrived here about that time
and the two were great friends. Pendleton was a man of extraordinary memory,
was well read and could hold his own in controversy on any subject with any of
his neighbors. He in later years delighted in telling about the incidents of
pioneer life in Neenah, when the Indians were in possession. His life was an
eventful one, his career holiest, and he passed away in that peace incident to a
well spent life.
