Gary was born on Nov. 2, 1938, in Rockford, Ill., the son of Leonard and Lorraine (Sigler) Vanderlinden. Gary spent most of his childhood in Sioux City, living briefly in Wichita, Kan., and Pineville, Mo. He attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High and Central High School.
He married Roberta on Oct. 12, 1957, in Elk Point, S.D. As a teenager, Gary worked for Peter Kiewit and Son Co. building the roads throughout the Badlands. He worked for Johnson Biscuit (Interbake Foods) for 18 years and then worked for Palmer Candy until a job-related accident forced him into an early retirement.
Prior to his early retirement, Gary received a solo pilot license and had a passion for flying. He tried hang-gliding, and scuba diving. He participated in the first two Missouri River Raft Regattas, rode motorcycles, golfed, hunted, fished, and went on family camping trips. He was a handyman who would offer his help to anyone. He taught each of his children how to work on cars and basic carpentry skills.
Most importantly, Gary was a dedicated husband who was devoted to his family. He attended his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities. He even dressed up as an Easter Bunny for his grandchildren's Easter egg hunt. He enjoyed visits with his family and phone calls from his friend, Bill.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta; three children, Laura (Gary), Kevin (Lori), and Brian (Kat); a brother, Kenneth (Dee) of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents.
