- Jerry D. Vanderlinden, 80, of Sioux City died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at a Sioux City care facility.
Services will be 7 p.m. today at Glad Tidings Lighthouse Church, with the Rev. Michael Ring officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.
Jerry was born in Crofton, Neb., on Aug. 19, 1927, the son of Leonard and Cecia (Perdue) Vanderlinden. He attended school in Sioux City. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1945. He served four ships, making a total of nine Atlantic crossings. After his discharge in 1947, he returned to Sioux City.
On Dec. 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Beyrl Beller. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He operated the Deluxe and later the Radio Cabs in Sioux City from the late 1940s to 1959. In early 1960, he began working for the U.S. Post Office. Due to a disability, he retired in 1976.
He loved the outdoors. He liked race cars and, in his youth, motorcycles. He was a collector and enjoyed collecting American western items, reading books and watching movies.
He is survived by his wife, Beyrl; three sons, Jerry Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert of Carter Lake, Iowa, and Mark and his wife, Rita of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Nadine and Gene Dutler of Ida Grove, Iowa; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Leonard and Lorraine of Sioux City and Don and Lois of Tulsa, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert, Dennis and Duaine; a grandson, Heath; and a daughter-in-law, Loretta.
