The following concerning the passing of Mrs. Hurst was written by Mayor L. F. Nelson, president of the Outagamie County Pioneer and Historical society:
In the death of MRs. John Hurst, Kaukauna has lost one of its great historical characters of unusual interest, as the Beaulieu family, of which Mrs. Hurst belongs, shares honors with the Lawes and the Grignons, other early settlers in Kaukauna.
Mrs. Hurst, nee Elizabeth Beaulieu, was born in Kaukauna, December 13, 1855 and was the daughter of Nicholas Beaulieu. Mrs Hurst's mother, Margaret (Davids) Beaulieu was also born in Kaukauna, in a log house around the bend on the edge of the rever below the present ball grounds on March 7, 1826.
      Grandfathers Met in War
Mrs. Hurst's great grandfather, Jacob Davids, fought in the Revolutionary war. Her grandfather and great grandfather fought on opposite sides in the War of 1812, one of them with the Americans and the other with the British. They met on the battlefield. The great grandfather had made a trip to Canada at that time and was forced into the British army.
      Part Stockbridge Indian
Mrs. Hurst is part Stockbridge Indian, one of the tribes that belonged to the six great nations of New York state and for years lived in expectation of receiving a large grant of money from the government in payment for lands taken away from the Stockbridge Indians in New York state by the government.
Paul H. Beaulieu, her uncle, was the first citizen of Kaukauna to die in the Civil war. The Kaukauna G.A.R. post was named in his memory.
The home in which Mrs. Hurst lived on Beaulieu hill was built in 1877 with lumber taken from the old saw mill when it was torn down. This sawmill stood at the bend below the ball park and was operated in 1835 by Captain Boyd and her uncle, Bazil Beaulieu.
      Wed in 1874
Mrs. Hurst was married to John Hurst in 1874. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Hackle at Holy Angels church at Darboy, at the time when the south side of the river was a wilderness.
She received her early schooling in a country school located opposite the Brill farm, south of the city. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1924.
      Recalled Early Days
She recalled the time, when as a child, the Beaulieu family was forced to cross the river, before there was a bridge, on stepping stones or in a rowboat. at this time there were hardly any other settlers on the south side of the river, except Indians. One of these Stockbridge Indians, Chief Konkopot, lived on the high bluff on the north end of Dickson street, where the old Joseph Volas residence now stands.
Mrs. Hurst was proud of her stockbridge Indian blood. Twelve children were born to the hursts, eight are still living.
