  • Notes
    • Douglas Roland Freund, age 78, of Sherwood, died on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at Appleton Medical Center in Appleton. He was born October 10, 1935 in Rhinelander, son of the late Ervin & Helen (Schmidt) Freund. Doug married Mary Ann Nennig on November 1, 1958.

Following a storied working career, Doug began enjoying the retirement life in 2003; it was a time he could devote more of his life to the enjoyment of all of the simple blessings of life.

He was a lover of nature, especially his birds and cherished the time he could spend with his family. Doug was always happiest when he was at his home he and his wife built doing yard work, or working on one of his various wooden creations. Doug could also be found tinkering with things or making jigs to help make something work better or more efficiently than it had been before.

In his free time, he also formed puzzles and played thousands of games of Free Cell.

He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him. Survivors include his wife: Mary Ann; his children: Lisa (Randy) Wachowiak and their children: Brandon & Matt, Carrie (Guy) Gossens and their child, Emily, and Sue (Tom) Herrmann and their children: Macey & Parker; his sisters: Judy (Lloyd) Jones, Dolores (Denny) Blake, Bonnie (Mike) Breivogel; and his sisters and brothers-in-law: Arline (Don) Jensen, Art (Mary Ellen) Nennig, Barb (Bud) Wieting, Irene (Kerby) Merz, Doris (Dennis) Schaff, Cheryl (Peter) Bakke and Paula (Duane) DuBois. Doug is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws: Art & Eunice Nennig; brothers: Duane & Gerald Freund; and a brother-in-law: Don Dietz.

Funeral service will be at 11:30 am on Monday, December 30, 2013 at St. John Sacred Heart Catholic Church (N361 Military Rd) in Sherwood with the Rev. Michael Betley officiating. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 29, 2013 and on Monday at the church from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.

I am thankful for my wife of 55 years, the 3 daughters we raised, our 5 grandchildren, my family's health, the home we built 44 years ago, every sunrise, sunset and full moon I get to see, and for LIFE, the most precious possession we have.
