    • Pioneer Women Died

With the passing of Katherine Wettstein, which occurred
on Saturday morning last at the home of her son-in-law and
daughter: Mr. and Mrs. August Propson in the town of Chilton,
another of the pioneer women of this community has been
called to her reward. Mrs. Wettstein had been staying with
her daughter, Mrs. Propson, for four weeks previous to her
      death.
Katherine Hoffman Wettstein was born in Bavaria, Germany,
on February 26, 1846 and in 1853 she came to America with
her parents who settled at Johnsburg, Fond du Lac county,
where she remained until 1863 when she was united in marriage
to Joseph Wettstein and they settled in the southwest corner
of the town of Chilton on the farm now owned by Simon Steffes.
Her husband died some thirty-two years ago and with the aid of
her sons she carried on the work of the homestead until 1916
when she disposed of it and went to live with her daughter, Mrs.
      John Seichter of Charlesburg.
She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, a firm believer
in the Catholic Church and a regular attendant at the services
when her health permitted. She was friendly of disposition,
helpful to neighbors and friends, all of whom loved and respected
      her.
She was the mother of thirteen children, nine of whom are living
and deeply grieve over the death of their best and truest friend.
Those surviving are four daughters, Mrs. John Seichter of Charlesburg,
Mrs. John Dohr of Saukville, Mrs. August Propson of Chilton town and
Mrs. John Propson of Kloten: five sons, John of Oshkosh, Edward of
Boyd, Simon of Stockbridge, Hubert of Appleton and Albert of Sherwood.
She is also survived by five brothers, Joseph, John, Johan Hoffman of
Appleton, Baltas Hoffman of Kaukauna, and Simon Hoffman of
Saskatchewan, Canada; 72 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Those from outside attending the funeral were: John Wettstein of
Oshkosh, Edw. Wettstein of Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Wettstein
and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Hoffman of Appleton, Mr. and Mrs. John
