    • Eugene “Gene” Floyd Gonnering, age 88, lifelong resident of Freedom, passed away peacefully December 13, 2018, with his family by his side. He was born July 18,1930, son of the late John and Catherine (Verstagen) Gonnering.

      On May 4, 1960, he was united in marriage to his love Mary Kaiver and the couple resided in the Town of Freedom. She preceded him in death November 11, 2009.

      Gene was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, where he served as an altar boy, trustee and was a diamond giver for St. Nicholas remodeling and construction.

      He was owner of Milky Way Farms, a Korean War Army Veteran and life-long member of Freedom VFW and Little Chute American Legion Posts, and a member of the Freedom Lions Club. He was involved in land development and was a major stockholder for Suring State Bank. Gene enjoyed time spent at Kelly Lake.

      Gene is survived by his sons and their families: Ken (Sandra Effa) Gonnering, Freedom and their children: Kortney (Matt) Dahm, Katie (Aaron) Kiecker, and Jacob (friend, Morgan); Keith (Cindy Diedrich) Gonnering, Town of Vandenbroek and their children: Maria, Elizabeth and Stephanie; Bruce (Donna Verhasselt) Gonnering, Freedom and their children: Amber (Nate) Garvey, Jared, Leah (Tom) Ver Bust, and Allie; great-grandchildren: Madison, Blake, and Lyla Garvey, Sawyer and Owen Ver Bust, and Colton Dahm; sister, Pat (Jerry) Kittiko;sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Ron) Kaiver Daul and Sharon Gonnering.

      In addition to his wife, Mary, Gene was preceded in death by his son, Randal; brothers: Jack (Catherine) Gonnering, Donald (Lois) Gonnering, Orville Gonnering, and William (Dorothy) Gonnering; sisters: Adelle (Earl) VanEperen, Lorraine (Mike) Vandenberg, Rosie (Butch) Stoffel; and brother-in-law, Thomas Kaiver.

      Friends may call at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 from 12:00 pm until the funeral mass at 3:00 pm with Fr. Walter Stumpf officiating.

      Burial will take place in St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery, with Military Honors.
