Notes - John Peter Karls, age 90, of Stockbridge, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the Chilton Care Center. He was born June 24, 1924 in Stockbridge, son of the late Nicholas & Magdalene (Diedrich) Karls. Early in his life, he hauled milk for his fathers cheese plant in Stockbridge, and during the height of WWII, John worked in the Manitowoc shipyards helping build ships and submarines used in the war effort. He later went into the plumbing and heating business with his brother, Lloyd, and proudly became a licensed master plumber and heating. He married Betty Steinmetz on February 20, 1946 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge and in 1972, the couple appreciatively built and ran the Karls Hardware Store where they served the community of Stockbridge for over 30 years when John finally retired at the age of 81. Betty preceded him in death on October 23, 2004. John was a life time dedicated member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge, and was a long time chamber of commerce member. In his younger years, John was a member of the Calumet Sno Riders and devoted his time to the Village of Stockbridge by being a very dedicated fireman, served as a village board member, belonged to the sewer & water committee. Survivors include his children: Richard (Joan) Karls of Montana, Denis Karls of Stockbridge, Kristin (Butch) Danes of New Holstein, Brian (Deb) Karls of Stockbridge; a son-in-law: Michael Platten of St. Nazianz; grandchildren: Nick (Tara) Platten, Carrie (Kurt) Bratz, Megan Karls, Jestin (Peggy) Danes, Jerad Danes; great grandchildren: Ethan & Shawn Bratz, Emma Platten, Corbin & Della Danes; a sister: Julie Hooyman; and his sisters-in-law: LouAnn Schmidt & Elvera Karls. John is further survived by many wonderful nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughters: Mary Karls & Ellen Platten; sisters: Loretta (Raleigh) Strebe, Dell (Jack) Wagner, Margret (Art) Bauer, Magdalene (Arno) Heller, Lucy (Gilbert) Wieseckel; a brother: Lloyd Karls; a brother-in-law: Elroy (Delores) Steinmetz; and a sister-in-law: Beulah Portmann.
Funeral service will be at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Michael Betley officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Wednesday, February 25, 2015.
