  • Notes
    • Glenn Joseph Spaay, age 81, of Mt. Horeb, WI passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, October 31, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Glenn was born September 11, 1936, in Appleton, WI, to John and Theresa (Vandenberg) Spaay. He married Mary A. Roach on June 1, 1963, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Florence, WI; and they spent their lives in Mt. Horeb. Glenn was a business teacher, a principal, the athletic director, and the first wrestling coach and the first golf coach for the Mt. Horeb Area School District over a span of 33 years.

Glenn grew up on several farms, the last one in Sturtevant. He went to high school at St. Catherine’s of Racine, WI, where he joined the U.S. Naval Reserves; and then upon graduation, completed training and served with the U.S Navy Pacific Fleet toward the end of the Korean War. As attaché for Admiral Pride, Glenn got to serve on several ships and was the admiral’s driver in many ports of call. Glenn earned his business education degree from UW Whitewater, and his Master’s in education administration from the University of Northern Colorado. Glenn was very active in the Mt. Horeb community and the surrounding area, serving on the MH Volunteer Fire Department, the first Summer Frolic committees, St. Ignatius Catholic Church Council, Director of adult night classes for 15 years, and Mound Vue Garden Club. He loved old cars, bikes, tractors, and airplanes; and he was a member of the Wisconsin Capital Model T Ford Club for over 20 years. Glenn loved being with family, sharing stories, fishing, kayaking, and making lefse. He was also part of the core of volunteers that made Donald County Park become a gem of the driftless area that he truly enjoyed.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 54 years, their children: Sara (Rick) Frommeyer, St. Paul, MN; Patrick (Myla Gray), Madison; Lea, Monona, Corinne (Jeff) Ness, New Glarus; his grandchildren: Griffin, Elena, Carter, Antoinette, Aidan, Hadley, Renee, and Koen. He is also survived by his sister: Ann Blommel (Roger Heppner) of Slinger; his brothers: Gene of Kenosha and Tom of Wausau; and many brothers-and sisters-in-laws, and also many special nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Rosemary Alby, Alvina Vanderwerff, and Joan Angelo; and his brother: Carl.
