Police, Fire Commissioner Unmuth Dies
Was Appleton Druggist for Over 35 years
Martin Unmuth, 65, long time Appleton druggist and member of the city's police and fire commission since 1961, died Thursday night after a short illness. He was 65.
Unmuth owned and operated a drug store at 212 E. Wisconsin Ave. for 35 years, was born June 11, 1900 in Oshkosh and graduated from St. Peter High School. He attended Marquette and the University of Wisconsin schools of pharmacy and was graduated from the Madison school. He had been retired since June.
Unmuth became a police and fire commissioner to replace Carl Sherry April 20, 1961. He had been a member of the city's planning commission eight years previous to his appointment and had also served on a special committee to study zoning for the Appleton Industrial Development Corp.
Outstanding Award
In 1936, Unmuth was awarded the Junior Chamber of Commerce's Most Outstanding Young Man award and in later years served as a director of the Appleton Chamber of Commerce.
He was a charter member and helped found the Northside Businessmen's Association.
A member of St. Therese Church, Unmuth was active in the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree, the Foresters and Holy Name Society.
He had served as a commissioner for the Fox Cities Foxes and a director of the Northern State Bank. He was active in the Elks and Moose clubs and the Butte des Morts Golf Club. He was a member of the National Retail Druggists Association and the Wisconsin Druggists Association.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Church and burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Rosary will be at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Brettschneider Funeral Home.
Survivors include his widow, three children, a sister and six grandchildren.
