    • Oconto County Reporter, Oconto, WI, Thursday, September 21, 1944, p. 10:3. Aged County Resident Dies Friday; Age 96. John Gilles, 96, one of the oldest residents of Oconto county, died in Lena at the home of his son, Frank, with whom he had been living. Death occurred Friday morning from diseases incident to old age. The deceased was born in Fond du Lac Nov. 24, 1847, and he had lived in Oconto county the past 43 years. His wife preceded him in death 51 years ago.
      Survivors beside his son are three daughters, Mrs. O.A. Brohaugh, Laurel, Mont.; Mrs. Jake Schoenborn, Kiel, Wis., and Mrs. Nathan Dick, Bridgeton, N.J.; 25 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Charles Catholic church in Lena Monday morning at ten o'clock, the Rev. E.H. Vassiere officiating. Burial was at Jericho, Wis. The Steffen Funeral home had charge of funeral arrangements. Pallbearers were Bernard Schraufnagel, George Greenwood, Rudolph Niquette, Ralph Hansel, John Otradovec and Lee Yost.

Gilles, 96, were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the St. Charles Catholic church, the Rev. E.H. Vassiere officiating. Pallbearers were Bernard Schraufnagel, Geo. Greenwod, Rudolph Niquette, Lee Yost, Ralph Hansel, and John Otradovec. Burial was at Jericho, Wisconsin. John Gilles was born at Fond du Lac, Nov. 24, 1847, and had been a resident here for 43 years. His wife died 51 years ago. He died early Friday morning of causes incident to old age. Survivors are one son, Frank, of Lena, with whom he made his home; three daughters, Mrs. O.A. Brohaugh, of Laurel, Mont., Mrs. Jake Schoenborn, Kiel, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Nathan Dick of Bridgeton, N.J.; 25 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

      Chilton Times-Journal, Thursday, September 28, 1944, p. 3:4. Hold Funeral Rites for John Gilles, 96. Funeral rites for John Gilles, 96, former resident of Jericho, who passed away at Lena on Friday, Sept. 15, were held Monday morning, Sept. 18, at the Steffen Funeral Home, Lena, Wis., and at 10 o'clock at St. Charles church there. Burial took place in Holy Trinity church cemetery at Jericho. Rev. Edward Wagner officiated at the grave. Mr. Gilles was born Nov. 24, 1847, in Fond du Lac county. He had been making his home with his daughter at Kiel for several years before moving to Lena. His wife preceded him in death 51 years ago. Survivors are 3 daughters and one son. They are: Mrs. O.A. Brohaugh of Laurel, Montana; Mrs. Jacob Schoenborn, Kiel; Mrs. Nathan Dick, Bridgeton, N.J., and Francis Gilles, Lena, Wis. One son and one daughter preceded him in death. Twenty-five grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive, 6 grandsons of whom are in the armed forces. Among those from away who attended the services were Mrs. Nathan Dick and Miss Dolores Dick, Bridgeton, N.J.; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Koehn, Little Chute; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thill and daughters of Stockbridge; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kopf, Chilton; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Steffes, Jericho; Mr. and Mrs. John Steiner, Charlesburg; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Schoenborn and daughter, Clarice, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Schoenborn, and Mrs. Robert Mangan, Kiel, and many others from Oconto, Pound, Kelly Lake, Lena and Fond du Lac.

      Tri-County Record, Kiel WI, Thurs. Sept. 28, 1944. John J. Gilles Laid to Rest. Funeral services for John J. Gilles, who passed away last week Friday, were held Monday morning at 9:45 o'clock at the Steffen Funeral Home at Lena, and at 10 o'clock a requiem high mass was sung by the Rev. E. Vaissiere, at St. Charles church, Lena. Burial was made in the Holy Trinity cemetery at Jericho, beside the grave of his wife. Mr. Gilles was born in Fond du Lac county on Nov. 24, 1847. His wife, the former Agnes Mayer, passed away Jan. 20, 1893. Mr. Gilles made his home here with his daughter, Mrs. Schoenborn and family for a number of years. Since last April he has been with his son Francis at Lena. He is survived by three daughters and one son, namely: Mrs. O.A. Brohaugh of Laurel, Montana, Mrs. Jake Schoenborn of this city, Mrs. Nathan D. Dick of Bridgeton, New Jersey, and Francis Gilles of Lena. One son and a daughter preceded him in death. There are also 25 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Six of his grandsons are in the service of their county, as follows: First Lieutenant Mark Gilles in England, Lieutenant Victor Gilles in Texas, Sergeant John Gilles in the Hawaiian Islands, Staff Sergeant Robert Schoenborn in New Guinea, T Sergeant James Schoenborn in England, Ross Starr, PhM2C, received a medical discharge after service in the South Pacific. Pallbearers were Rudolf Niquette, George Greenwood, Henry Peetz, John O. Tronivic, Ralph Hansel and Bernard Straitnagle all of Lena. Those from away that attended the service were the following: Mr. and Mrs. Koehn of Little Chute; Mr. and Mrs. Simon Scholl and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Frazier of Fond du Lac; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kopf of Chilton; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thiel and daughters of Stockbridge; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Steffes of Jericho; Mr. and Mrs. John Steiner of Charlesburg; Mrs. Michael Maloney and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Martin of Pound; Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Schoenborn of Milwaukee; Mrs. Nathan Dick and Miss Deloris Dick of Bridgeton, New Jersey; and Mrs. Robert Mangan, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Schoenborn and Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schoenborn and daughter.
