(Mrs. Harold) (nee Van Boxtel) Appleton
Age 93, passed away Monday, November 5, 2001 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Nellie was born May 1, 1908 in Little Chute; the daughter of the late Henry and Gertrude (De Kleyn) Van Boxtel. Nellie was the first of their children to be born in the United States since immigrating from Holland in 1903. She was a life long resident of the Fox Valley. She was united in marriage to Harold Hopfensperger on May 17, 1927, sharing 57 years together before his death on July 21, 1984.Nellie was truly the matriarch of our family. She was the glue that bonded us together. She enjoyed spending time with family, playing sheepshead, and making quilts for all her grandchildren. She remained close to the Lord by praying the rosary daily.
She will be deeply missed by her children: Bernice (Mark "Gus") Dercks, Appleton; Audrey (Pat) Long, Menasha; Kenneth (May) Hopfensperger, Bristol, Connecticut; Gary (Barb) Hopfensperger, Saxville; David (Mary) Hopfensperger, Sherwood; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Ann (Sonny) Wildenberg, Kimberly; Isabelle Van Boxtel, Little Chute; Margaret (Lester) Hopfensperger, Appleton; brother-in-law, Roland (Elizabeth) Hopfensperger, Appleton.
In addition to her parents and husband, Nellie was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Hopfensperger in 1997; two sisters: Wilhelmina Brown and Martha Sheehy; and four brothers: Peter, Casey, Frank and Tony Van Boxtel.
The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 5 p.m. Thursday, November 8th at St. Therese Catholic Church, corner of Wisconsin Ave. and Morrison Sts., with Fr. Dan Gilsdorf officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Little Chute. Friends may call directly at the church from 3 p.m. Thursday until the time of the service. A memorial fund has been established. Nellie's family would like to thank Drs. Witte and Klingbeil, and the entire staff of 4-south at St. Elizabeth Hospital for the compassionate care they gave our mother.
