    • Edmund M. Halbach, 83, of Kiel and formerly of Marytown, died Tuesday morning, April 20, 2004, at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.

      He was born July 30, 1920, in Marytown, son of the late Vincent and Martina Casper Halbach. He attended St. Mary's Grade School in Marytown.

      Edmund served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II being involved in the Normandy Invasion. He recently received the Purple Heart and numerous other World War II medals.

      On Oct. 20, 1956, Edmund married Bernadine Watry at St. Ann Catholic Church, St. Anna.

      He owned and operated the Halbach Mink Ranch in Marytown until 1993, when he retired. The couple moved to Kiel in 1996.

      Edmund was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marytown; the New Holstein American Legion, Post 124; the Marytown Veterans Organization; and the Marytown Athletic Club, where he served as president for over 20 years.

      He enjoyed playing cards, fishing and playing checkers with his grandchildren.

      Survivors include his wife, Bernadine of Kiel; five children, Sandra (Paul) Merten of St. Cloud, Janice (Steven) Sabel of Johnsburg, Donna (Ken) Immel of Johnsburg, Marlene Steiner and friend Jeff Feyen of Fond du Lac, and Joseph (Jennifer) Halbach of Marytown; and 10 grandchildren, Bobbi Jo, Scott and Emily Merten, John and Michael Sabel, Jason and Craig Immel, Joshua, Jessica and Jacob Halbach. He is further survived by four brothers, Sylvester Halbach, James (Kathy) Halbach, Howard (Joanne) Halbach and Vincent (Marie) Halbach; seven sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Robert; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and one grandson, Christopher Sabel.

      Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marytown, with the Rev. Joseph Coerber officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

      Friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 Sixth St., Kiel, on Thursday, April 22, from 4 until 8 p.m. and at the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. when brief family rites will take place.

      A wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
