Johanna is a native of Prussia, born September 16, 1834, a daughter of Rinehart Siemons, a Hollander, who came to the United States in 1848, and was one of those who first settled Holland township, Brown county, in that year.
Johanna (Hannah) first married John Goerkes, who was drowned in the canal lock at Kaukauna, where he was lock-keeper at the time. By her first husband she had three children Henry, John and Mary of whom the last named married Martin Vandezagt, and died leaving no children.
Henry went to the Pacific coast in 1882, soon afterward making a trip to Australia; but, not liking the country, he returned after a short stay, after which time his home was, for the most part, in Tulare county, Cal., until 1893, when he removed to Alaska, and is now engaged in mining along the Yukon river.
John went to the Pacific coast four years later than Henry, and in the spring of 1894 also went to Alaska, where he is now engaged in mining with his brother. After Henry's arrival in that country it was 6 months before he reached the mines, being detained on account of the snow. The brothers are both practical mechanics, with the ability to turn their hands to almost any kind of work, a fact which accounts in a great measure for their success in all their undertakings.
On February 17, 1862, Mrs. Hannah Goerkes married, at Little Chute, Wis., John Broeren. They are members of St. Francis Catholic Church, and are held in the highest esteem in the community. Their children, eight in number, were: 1.Peter, in California; 2. George, a farmer in Holland township. Brown county; 3. Francis W. , who died December 10, 1869; 4. Anna M., organist of St. Francis Church; 5. Cecilia B., at home; 6. Theodore, in Portland, Ore. ; 7. Wilhelmina and 8. William, both at home.
