Walter was born on October 2, 1938 in Roy, OR. He was one of 14 children born to George and Cecilia (VanDyke) Duyck. He was raised on the family farm in Roy and attended grade school at St. Francis Catholic Grade School. Walter later attended Banks High School and graduated with the Class of 1956. He was enlisted into the US Army and served his country in Germany during the Cold War.
Walter was united in marriage to Carolyn Herb on September 2, 1961 in Verboort, OR. Following their marriage they made their home in Beaverton for a short while, and then moved to their farm in Cornelius, OR in 1966. Together they raised five children and eight grandchildren. Their Catholic faith was an important part of their lives.
Walter briefly worked at Tektronix, but a few years later left to pursue what he really wanted to do- farming. He spent some time working for his brother, Lloyd, on his farm and then started his own. He raised blueberries, black raspberries, wheat, and also operated a blueberry nursery with his partner, Larry Dupre. In 1974 he bought a ditcher, and he and Larry started a farm tiling business called, Oregon Pipe and Supply Co. They tiled for 10 years. Walt really enjoyed farming, and although he retired in 2000, he never stopped working on the family farm.
Among WalterÂ’s other interests, he enjoyed his parish family at St. Alexander's, camping, grandchildren's activities, visiting casinos with his siblings, and the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and especially enjoyed fishing in Oregon and Alaska with his brother, Rollie, and his friends, Dennis Pratt, Jeff Beaudoin, Phil Muir. He also enjoyed clamming at the Oregon coast, wood working ( to support Carolyn's tole painting hobby) and traveling. He traveled abroad and throughout the US. Walt loved his family and Tiger, his fat cat. He also loved to pester his many nieces and nephews, especially out in the blueberry fields! In 2000, Walt was diagnosed with colon cancer. After treatment, he resumed an active life. More recently he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He again bravely battled the disease, but ultimately passed away at his home on Saturday morning with loved ones present.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn, his parents, and three brothers, Rollie, LeRoy and Kenny Duyck.
