- Mt. Angel - Wayne Van Dyke died Saturday in his home at the Mt. Angel Towers.
Wayne was born in Hillsboro, Oregon, to George and Ethel Van Dyke. He grew up on a farm outside of Forest Grove and had a great childhood with his siblings and young aunts and uncles.
After graduating from Verboort High School, Wayne attended the University of Portland, earning a degree in business. He went to work for First National Bank of Oregon where he met the love of his life, Betty Mautz. Betty and Wayne were married on May 1, 1954. They raised two daughters, Lisa and Brenda.
Waynes entire career was with First National Bank, which eventually became First Interstate Bank of Oregon. As he worked his way up from teller to branch manager, the family was transferred at each step and they lived in Portland, Beaverton, Seaside, Forest Grove, West Linn, Hillsboro, Bend and finally in Mt. Angel, though Wayne was transferred one last time to Woodburn. That time a move was not required.
Because of Waynes outgoing personality, the bank tapped him twice to open branches, the last one being the Mt. Angel Branch.
During his professional life, Wayne was active with many civic groups. He served on the local Chamber of Commerce, the Oktoberfest board, Mt. Angel School District Budget Committee, and Woodburn Rotary Club. He belonged to Kiwanis Clubs while living in other cities.
Throughout his life, Wayne loved hunting and fishing. While some family vacations were basic tourist trips, most involved hunting and fishing. In their younger years, Betty and Wayne made annual trips to Summer Lake to shoot geese. Wayne enjoyed elk hunting trips to NE Oregon with the guys. There was always deer hunting on family property. He loved fishing in the ocean for salmon, halibut, or albacore, crabbing in bays, and fishing for kokanee at Wickiup Reservoir. He caught his last fish on May 11a nice 15 kokanee.
Wayne is survived by daughters: Lisa Borgerson (Mark) and Brenda Weaver (Rick); grandchildren: Jeff and Jenna Borgerson; siblings: Joanne Scabery, Gene Van Dyke (Kathy), Jim Van Dyke (Carol) and David Van Dyke (Veronica); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in September 2015.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on June 20, 2017 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Mt. Angel.
Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oregon Health Sciences University.
