    • In 1860 Joseph gave up his work in the Wagon & Carriage factory in Chicago. With the husbands of three sister; Joseph Goodman, Joseph Breunig and John Guild went by covered wagon and ox team to Marshall Co., IA. to homestead on government land near the present town of Rhodes. The women and children went by train as far as Iowa City, which was the end of the railroad at that time, and the men met them with the ox carts.

      As farmers they prospered, although they suffered many hardships. Joseph often was gone from home several weeks at a time, breaking new prairie land and putting in crops, and there was always the fear that Indians might wipe out his family and burn his home while he was gone. The times the Indians did stop, Margaret treated them kindly and they did no harm.
