  • Notes
    • Robert A. Sheedy, 85, of Green Bay, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, from liver cancer. Bob, born Aug. 19, 1926, in Flintville, was the last surviving child of Ambrose and Flora (Burdeau) Sheedy. Like his five brothers, Bob enlisted in the military, serving in the U.S. Army beginning in January 1945. His tour of duty began in the Philippines and ended in Japan, serving as a detention guard and destroying Japanese war material. He was discharged in November 1946 as a sergeant. On Oct. 18, 1952, Bob married Mary Jean Pelegrin in Green Bay. They had six children -- Donna, Diane, Dawn, Denise, David, and Dixie. He took pride in his family and their accomplishments. He in turn set a great example for his family to follow. Bob was a man of integrity who believed you should treat others as you want to be treated. He was a devout Catholic, proud Irishman, and took great delight in watching his grandchildren grow into fine young adults. For the first several years after his marriage, Bob worked in the trucking and heavy equipment industries. For Brown County, he was an auxiliary officer and worked in civil defense from 1947 to 1959, served as special deputy for Brown County from 1959 to 1989, was a Brown County Conservation Warden and a DNR Warden from 1963 to 1975. He also was a snowmobile safety instructor from 1965 to 1973. In 1963, Bob was named assistant manager of the Brown County Reforestation Camp. When he became manager in 1973, the Sheedy family moved to the residence at the camp. Bob directed the work of the honor farm inmates who groomed trails, planted trees, and completed other work to create a wonderful outdoor recreation area and small zoo. Bob gradually expanded the camp's menagerie of animals to include llamas, bobcat, cougar, and Smokey the Bear. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Bob worked to win support for a full-fledged zoo at the camp. He helped advance the project by persuading companies and individuals to contribute equipment, labor and money for construction of the NEW Zoo, which today receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. In 1985, Bob was named Parks Director for Brown County, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. Even after retirement, he kept busy. He worked for Red's Excavating, and for Pfotenhauer Funeral Home. He spent considerable time in his shop in the garage, basement and later a separate small barn. His Christmas light display was one to behold. Bob was a long-time member of the Howard-Suamico Optimist Club. He was also a charter member of Suamico VFW Post 9409. At Ss. Edward and Isidore Church in Flintville, Bob helped at many events, activities and church functions over the years. He was instrumental in obtaining donated labor and the use of construction equipment for the church expansion in 1996 and the expansion of the parking lot in 2000.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jean; four daughters: Donna of Green Bay, Dawn Porter (Dan) of Ione, Calif., Denise (Kent) Tempus of Green Bay, Dixie Sheedy (Elmo Jones) of Green Bay; and a son, David (Mary) Sheedy of Janesville. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Chelsea Sheedy of Madison and Connor Sheedy of Janesville, and three step-grandchildren, Danny (Hannah) Willmer of Madison, Alexandra Tempus of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Anna Mae Tempus of Shawano; and by three sisters-in-law, Martha Sheedy, Evelyn Sheedy, and Betty Sheedy, all of Flintville.

Bob was preceded in death by one daughter, Diane Sheedy; six brothers, Irvin, Harold, Lawrence, Neil, Willard, and an infant Ambrose; and four sisters, Evelyn Sheedy, Mildred Weycker, Margaret Weyenberg, and Dorothy Bussiere.

Visitation is scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Ss. Edward and Isidore Catholic Church, 3667 Flintville Road, Flintville. Members of VFW Post 9409 will conduct memorial service at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Visitation continues at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at Ss. Edward and Isidore Catholic Church, Flintville, followed by the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m., with Rev. David Kasperek officiating. Burial in the church cemetery complete with full Military Honors. Online condolences are welcome at www.PfotenhauerFuneralHome.com In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank Unity Hospice for the kind and considerate care Daddy received.
